The function of SADiLaR is to a focus on all official languages of South Africa, supporting research and development in the domains of language technologies and language-related studies in the humanities and social sciences. The Department of Science and Innovation has supported SADiLaR by investing R239-million over three years, as part of the new South African Research Infrastructure Roadmap.
The centre supports the creation, management and distribution of digital language resources and software, which is freely available for research purposes through the Language Resource Catalogue. Board CEO Lance Schultz says, “We see as also as a natural progression so that learners of these various languages and by and large the students’ needs to gets access either to curriculum or to research or for language development purposes will be able to access that.
