A North East fairground firm has been fined £28,000 after the tragic death of a ride operator who was struck and killed by a rollercoaster. Dean Cariss, 52, suffered fatal head injuries whilst working on a ride at the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park in South Shields on March 19, 2023. The ride operator had been carrying out routine daily tests and maintenance at the time of the accident when he was struck by a moving car from the rollercoaster he was working on.

The 52-year-old was taken from the scene to Newcastle's Royal Victoria infirmary but sadly died in hospital 13 days later. The company pleaded guilty to the charge and was handed down a £28,000 fine by South Tyneside Magistrates' Court last month.
