American Airlines will start selling middle seats again as airlines bet that customers won't care about social distancing in flight

American will still require masks on board, and said it will expand its disinfection initiative on planes. It will also allow customers to switch to an emptier flight, if possible. It may be a little bit harder to snag an empty middle seat next to you on your next flight.

The airline had been limiting capacity on flights and blocking passengers from choosing middle seats in the name of social distancing since April. Delta, however, has said it will cap flights at until at least the September 30, blocking middle seats in economy, and every other seat in first class. The airline has said it will add additional flights to routes where demand outpaces the limited capacity.

Airlines and industry representatives, including the International Air Transport Association, have argued that social distancing on flights is not necessary, due to air flow patterns on planes, High Efficiency Particulate Air filters that prevent microbes in the air from recirculating, other cleaning measures, and the use of masks.

Imagine a route where AA is the only non-stop carrier. What is worse: changing planes or sitting next to a random person?

I hope this ridiculous business decision backfires on them.

They never stopped. Airplanes were flying full. They are just announcing it because customers were getting mad when they arrived to their flight and the airplane was full. Now you have to assume the risk...

AA should do what they do best, selling seats. The rest of the issue could only be about the personal responsibilities of the people.

😲😡😡😡😡😡 I care!!!! Not flying ANY airline especially during a pandemic and without a vaccine for protection.

No thank you. Looks like I'll be renting a car to get home for Christmas this year.

I assume American is voluntarily welcoming the 2nd wave eh? Well done! 😉😎

It’s the American thing to do! Dumb asses

I have been an elite AA Executive Platinum traveler for over 20 years. Over 5 million miles flown. Is this is indeed true I won’t fly until American gets its act together. There is no need to fly if I am going to get infected because AA is not following social distance guidelines

Bad bet.

Insane..... COVID

Un-American airline. amirite
