Experts have estimated that as many as 25,000, or 20%, of New York City’s hotel rooms may not return after the pandemic. COVID-19 has meant trouble for the $70 billion tourism industry in NYC.

With Broadway theaters dark, museums and stadiums closed, and no bars letting patrons in to take a break from sweaty sidewalks, New York City looks nothing like its usual self at the height of the summer tourist season. The city’s signature features are closed for the foreseeable future, putting much of the economy on hold, and making how long it will be until tourists return a multibillion-dollar question.

In lieu of making plans that are contingent on tourism, bars, restaurants, and venues are instead turning their attention toward creatively drumming up business from locals for the foreseeable future. And though expanded outdoor dining and the ability to legally deliver alcoholic drinks have helped some bars and restaurants reopen to brisk business, in an industry known for slim margins, those measures may not be enough to keep businesses afloat during an indefinite tourism drought.

While theaters and venues remain closed, the city’s entertainment industry is exploring options for moving summer events outdoors or in spaces that allow for adequate social distancing. Late last month, the Tribeca Film Festival announced plans to host a series of drive-in movies this summer at Orchard Beach in the Bronx.

Now they can house the homeless.

They'll have to reduce the price.

You need a death wish to visit Chicago. Maybe “crime tourism” could be a thing though.

cities are over with now

They won’t show up to be harassed by bands of hoodlums roaming the streets with baseball bats in their hands!

What will they be converted into? Bitcoin and cloud computer rooms? Rentable storage space? Indoor food production? There not going to be condos or casinos.

Fearmongering. NY is connected to the world and the most recognized US city anywhere.

Tourism? Who would go ! That clown mayor has ruined that once great city . People are leaving by the thousands

I guess over regulation is getting so bad in NYC,even hotel rooms don’t want to stay there.

With the rise in crime and filth and that clown mayor no one visiting anyway. People are leaving by the thousands!

So glad that I've been to New York twice.. back during the good old times. Now between covid, blm and antifa riots, boarded up stores, high crime, etc. - might take New York several years and a new mayor to restore the city.

Maybe paint more BLM messages on the streets. That seem to solve problems.

Who the hell would want to go there now!? Just wait til the rest of the tax base is gone. NYC is the new Detroit.

Where will the rats live?

Not sure it’s entirely due to COVID-19. Likely more to do with NYC being turned into a horrible place to live, work, and visit.

We will never return to NY until the City is safe again

Lower prices

All of the violence and killing sure won't help. NY has become a city not worth visiting.

New York City might be the single worst vacation spot on Earth, which also may have something to do with it.

But don’t discount new ones that will be built

Good, stay away from this leftist ghetto!

Thank you China for exposing the world to your negligent lifestyles ..and to WHO failing to warn the world of the pandemic for months!!!

The city is lost to DeBlasio land animals

Prob be no Thanksgiving day parade, and christmas decorations site seeing wont happen and shopping either

To start they have to get rid of De Blasio and Cuomo. They both are slowly but surely destroying NYC

That’s for sure.. pandemic + looting + crime on the rise .. hell no I ain’t ever going back.. good luck fools

Yea cause tourists wanna visit New Iraq

The Big Rotten Apple.🍎

Many have estimated that nobody knows what the fuck they are talking about.

What about real estate?

I would never go back, too unsafe now. It was iffy 2 years ago but no way I would show up now for the sh*tShow that is going to follow this 'pandemic'.

It’s not the pandemic that will keep tourist away. It’s a no run unsafe city. Because of Deblasio. Crimes and shootings are way up. Not to mention the rats taking over the city as well. Who would want to go to the city🤷‍♀️

Gonna have to make up that lost tax revenue some how

You don’t have to worry no one going to go to that cesspool now . Thanks clown mayor

“Closed attractions and travel restrictions” - sure. But I think you need to add, increase in crime and murder rates and a general feeling that city is no longer safe for tourist to be walking the streets.

Yup. And many actual taxpayers are leaving as well. NY is screwed and they did it to themselves

Welcome!

NYC should be more worried about the 50% of the New Yorkers that may not be returning.

Well if NewYorker had really cared they would have behave otherwise

I don't visit shitholes

Why would anyone want to go to New York? High crime, lockdowns, terrible weather, high prices, idiot de Blasio...

But, just image all the empty NYC co-ops and condos that will become available as AirBnBs...

We can have federal reserve's printing press in all of them & work non stop🤣

Blame everything on COVID that ain’t why they leaving!

What a shit hole. I blame NYGovCuomo. He let it happen.

CHEAP HOTEL ROOMS HIYOOOOO MARRIOTT hotelsdotcom LETS LOWER THOSE RATES BAYBEH

Good, I hope NYC implodes from within, it’s what their incompetent local politician leaders deserve

And finally the narrative begins to change.

Who in their right mind would want to go to NYC? Do you even think about what you publish?
