THUNDER BAY — The death of a young Thunder Bay man in a workplace accident last year has led to charges against his employer and a company supervisor.

Finn-Way General Contractor Inc. and a member of its staff are scheduled to appear in court next week on charges laid by the Ministry of Labour under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. A 25-year-old worker sustained fatal injuries on July 16, 2021 while working with heavy machinery in the company's yard at 1301 Walsh Street West.It alleges that Finn-Way failed to ensure certain measures and procedures outlined in the Act were carried out in the workplace, failed to take every reasonable precaution for the protection of a worker, and failed to provide information, instruction and supervision to a worker to protect his safety.

A supervisor is charged with failing to ensure a worker works in a manner, and with protective devices and procedures, required by law. The employee is also charged with failing to take every reasonable precaution for the protection of a worker at a workplace. The matter is scheduled for an appearance in the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 23.
