BAE Systems Jacksonville Ship Repair LLC has received a $25.4 million contract to work on the USS Cooperstown after its shake-down cruise.
Littoral combat ships come in two variants. The Freedom-class ships — including the Cooperstown — are steel monohulls built by Lockheed Martin and are based at Mayport Naval Station. The Independence variant is an aluminum trimaran design that are now being built by Austal USA and are based in San Diego.
The littoral combat ships have been controversial since they were built as replacement for the frigates that used to call Mayport Naval Station home.
