The time, expense and red tape of going legit has kept the black market in business, along with the high prices of legal weed.

DeVillaer, an assistant professor in McMaster’s d

“Thus, many cannabis consumers did not see a great moral, ethical or safety advantage to switching from their benign, long-term providers to the new legal system.” Indeed, many “legacy” growers see little benefit to switching, and don’t want to endure the time, expense and red tape of going legit.— many spending decades honing their skills in the province’s long and storied cannabis culture — who said Canada’s legal system has no place for them.

And with Canadian banks wanting nothing to do with even licensed cannabis businesses, going legit is a venture only for those with enough time and resources. “You can get a premium ounce for $100 on the streets, whereas in a retail store, it would cost over $250 for comparable quality,” he said.

Because the government charges way to much for premium weed funny how they can even sell weed properly liberals are a joke

Two for $5 on the street or one for $7 from the government. Where would you go?

its cheaper to buy it off the streets and the streets products are not packed in containers with more weight in plastic than the products inside !

In the small minds of the liberal party/JustinTrudeau think making it legal and government control would stop grow ops their dumper then you think. Gov. Control is more corrupt then the criminals when it comes to marijuana.

Well, the black market wouldn't destroy thousands of dollars worth of product just because it didn't sell that month. Waste = higher prices.

The illegal cannabis market operates in full view of the government and police via web delivery services. If the Canadian government wanted to, they could shut it all down. So why not!? Too expensive? Too many resources required? It’s obviously not a priority for gov of Canada.

The system was geared to exclude poor people from getting in. It was a rich get richer scheme. No wonder people are hitting up the black market. JustinTrudeau

I'm surprised, buying pot illegally was a gigantic pain in the ass half the time. Plus no check on quality, and some ego's to deal with to boot. I know people who grow for themselves personally but that's it.

Legalizing will ruin the gangs and cartels, they said.

Bikers have a better business model.

Just like alcohol it's far too over regulated and taxed. If there was an illegal alcohol market it would be thriving too.

Then the difference between legal vs. illegal are the amount of taxes paid. Why more people should buy the product if not required? healthypopulation

That’s because the legal stuff is 3x more in price.

This is what happens to *every* captured market. Trudeau cornered the cannabis growing market for his Bay Street friends, no one outside that circle could get past barriers to entry Booze has a thriving micro brewing industry requiring minimal investment

A plant you can grow legally but is illegal to sell because there is no tax revenue. That’s the real headline.

Why wouldn’t it be thriving? Why would people choose to be taxed and pay basically double that of the guy on the street corner? Government literally can’t do anything right. Not one thing they do is run efficiently and effectively. They can’t even be successful drug dealers.

People are giving it away for free because there is so much of it.

When the legal market is as flawed is it any wonder?
