The government failed to act on previous recommendations, and must now step up to avoid doubling the number of homes and businesses at risk, its own advisers urge.

The number of England's properties at risk of flooding from heavy rainfall could double in the next 30 years unless the government tackles dodgy drainage, its advisers have warned.

Intensifying rain fuelled by climate change and growing, unmanaged developments risk putting an extra 295,000 properties at high risk of this sort of flooding by 2055, unless the government steps up investment. Flooding from heavy rain is different to coastal or river flooding and tends to afflict urban areas in particular. It is often highly localised and hard to predict.

What are seeing is the result of thatcher privatisation policy 35years ago. All our public services are old boys clubs. Servicing dividends for the few rich investors. No investment. Thatcher killed the country.

Get your local council to clear the drains of leaves & rubbish

Wouldn't it be interesting if instead of election candidate name+party shown on ballot, but option of numbers 1, 2, 3 etc Each number representing a set of top 10 ten promises from candidate that they must adhere to. No names or party shown. Bit like public tender evaluation

I wrote a policy brief about this a few years ago. Action is a requirement or there will be wider economic damage, meaning more funds will be used fixing the damage taken from other parts of the economy than mitigating it. Many comments all have valid points.

Instead of fighting nature which you will not win - try moving, as people have done for centuries🙄

I remember a school assembly about this in 1985. How long does 30 years last these days?

Another money making exercise...
