Representatives of Canadian agriculture sectors say the federal government’s Indo-Pacific strategy could offer a chance to iron out trade barriers and expand export markets to meet the region’s growing demand.

Canadian canola, like this crop in eastern Saskatchewan, will likely be central to Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy around trade.

The multipronged $2.3-billion policy consists of everything from promoting peace and security to building a greener future. Food producers like its plan to increase trade, investments and supply chain resilience. Where $244.1 million is earmarked to improve trade between Canada and countries in the region, agriculture and agri-food are listed as priorities. An additional $31.8 million to establish Canada’s first agriculture office was announced prior to the full release of the strategy to improve trade outcomes.
