The federal government rejects Riverland wine industry's call for immediate financial assistance despite a warning more than 200 hectares of vineyards are forecast to be lost to floodwaters in a week's time.

abc.net.au/news/riverland-wine-industry-seeks-financial-assistance-amid-flood/101765052The Riverland wine industry's immediate request for financial assistance from the federal government has been rejected, despite more than 200 hectares of vineyards forecast to be lost to floodwaters in a week's time.

The federal government will consider support for the region's wine industry in the new year after the flood peak While Mr Watt said it was valuable to hear about the problems firsthand, support would not be made available until the new year, when"I was certainly aware before coming here, that local wine growers had been doing it tough for a couple of years [with] losing the China market and some of the other issues, but just hearing it from people face to face has been very useful," he said.

Riverland Wine executive officer Lyndall Rowe said rising river levels would compound the pre-existing tough market conditions and growers needed urgent support.

Is that a tax free handout Like the tax free wine growing thats gone on for years?

Vineyards created their own glut long before any floods - so the title concatenation is a bit weird. In any case, the Riverland has ~22,000 hectares of grapes so while 200 hectares might be hard on individual owners, in the industry scheme of things, barely a blip.

It would be good if the govt helped out the winegrape growers. Its because of the tarrifs in china that there is a massive red wine lake in Australia at present. Triggered by the scomo govt.
