KUALA LUMPUR: A 76-year-old woman was conned of RM600,000 of her life savings after she was approached by two men in a market in Taman Megah and urged to invest in a fund promising “100% profit”.

Breaking down in tears as she recounted her ordeal, the woman, known as only Madam Chan, said the men had told her during their meeting on Dec 8 that she was eligible to redeem RM200 from a project at a nearby petrol station.

“They pretended to be my grandchildren and told the bank officer that my husband was in Johor, and that the money was being withdrawn because the family was migrating overseas. They took hold of all the money from the counter itself. He said these conmen would often target their victims at morning markets, near banks and hospital bus stops.
