The United States spends untold millions on workforce training programs. Many don’t help people find jobs.

Having previously worked as a certified nursing assistant, Magilke leaped at the chance to move up in the medical field with the full $4,000 tuition for a medical-assistant training program covered. But she said she was never told that she needed in-person clinical training — which MedCerts did not provide — to make her a viable candidate for a job as a medical assistant.

Students enrolling in traditional two- and four-year colleges can easily find graduation rates and can even get some employment data. But the Department of Defense does not release information on how many students complete specific programs for some of its grants — or even how much money the providers get. The Department of Labor does track and publish results, but the state and federal data on how many students finish a program and get jobs is often contradictory or is simply unavailable.

Michigan state officials said companies use such disclaimers to justify any exception to the required performance metrics. Department officials said that MedCerts had been meeting or exceeding its goals for the number of students who pass a certification exam.Complicating matters further, agencies don’t track what kinds of jobs the students get, meaning they have no way of knowing whether the students ended up in the field they were studying.

“Some workforce boards are persistently under-resourced, and they lack an understanding of how to best use WIOA money,” said Justin Birch, program director of workforce development at the Rural Local Initiatives Support Corporation. Significant federal funding for workforce training programs like those MedCerts offers comes from military grants, including a military spousal benefit known as MyCAA and the grant Oue used. And these grants receive even less oversight than WIOA’s; no information is collected about how many students get jobs or continue their education elsewhere.

Say it isn't so.

Lots of these trade schools leech onto veterans' educational benefits, and wind up flooding the labor market with people who have the same certificate and can't get a job. Here in Florida, motorcycle techs are a dime a dozen, all products of trade schools.

This is the inevitable consequence of privatizing what should be a public service.

I'm not sure what they do in our city. Many people from all professions have offered to volunteer in many ways. Developing college programs and courses, teaching, etc. Nobody ever hears back from them and we wonder what they are doing with the money.

While the US Job market is continually changing & hampered by almost 4 yrs of Covid-19 & its many variants & millions in our midst 'per Wuhan Trump & GOP Murdoch/Fox middle-fingering any & all precautions

These programs are taxpayer handouts to the “Program Coordinators” : political activists that stumped for Dems. Like many liberal programs- at no point does anyone involved think it’s actually going to help anyone.

They don't help because they aren't 'real world'. I hired a guy out of one and it would have been the same as I had hired him off the street. Rather, give me the guy, augment his salary a bit (and not as a tax reduction) and he'll learn on the job and have a skill he can use.

Government programs rarely do any good, they are simply funneling money to politicians friends and donors. The “inflation reduction act” and “Infrastructure bill” are two of the most corrupt giveaways of federal funds ever perpetrated on Americans. But WP doesn’t mention those?

Fund community colleges/tech schools. Giving $ to pvt companies is problematic

iamjohnoliver LastWeekTonight Sounds like this would make for a good topic for an episode.

Government involvement makes everything worse. See education. See social security. See Medicare. Big government wastes money….no one disputes this.

Found that out personally in 1980. Nothings changed.

Wait wait, the government spends money in ineffective ways? The programs they fund are not producing the intended results? This simply cannot be!

Well, the taxpayers' money pays for jobs at the non-profits milking the system with their training programs.

INEFFECTIVE AND INEFFICIENT

And when they do, they get a cut!

Hahahahaha U just starting to figure out what the govt wastes money ?

Help me Cia tortures me a lot. Stop them. They make me TargetedIndividual
