Data gathered by the independent analyst Dr Peter Hammond has shown that illegal spills may be as high as 10 times those recorded by the Environment Agency.
The trust’s Tessa Wardley said: “The Government is clearly making strenuous efforts to challenge water companies to step up their performance on storm overflows. While this is welcome, the flurry of consultations with very short deadlines from Ofwat and Defra over the last few weeks smacks of knee jerk reactions that may not necessarily improve the state of our rivers in the long run.
The Ofwat announcement came on the same day that Defra announced a consultation on expanding its sewage targets to all rivers, coasts and estuaries. It also came as the bosses of three major water companies – Thames Water, Yorkshire Water and South West Water – announcing that they would give up their bonuses this year.
