In bottles with the Shiner logo, the lineup includes vodka, gin and moonshine. And bourbon is on the way.

— in the town of Shiner, about 80 miles east of San Antonio — has launched a distillery, known as the K. Spoetzl Distilling Company, to turn out vodka, gin, moonshine and one day, bourbon. Starting on May 29, visitors will be able to buy the spirits on-site.

The spirits, being sold in Shiner-branded bottles, are made with the same malts and artesian well water used in Shiner Bock beer. The brewery is distilling them in copper stills fashioned in Scotland, as well as with the copper grant, or collection vessel, used by Shiner’s original brewmaster, the Bavarian-bornThe distillery is in a house that used to be a fermenting cellar, one of the oldest parts of the brewery, she said.

Shiner began thinking a few years ago about making spirits, Michalec said. It put in an order for the distillery equipment about a year ago. Upon doing research at a local museum, company employees discovered what she called a “rich history” of distilling in the Shiner area. The company is now aging bourbon in a barrel house and it could be ready to drink in as soon as two years.

Already, visitors to the brewery can drink craft cocktails made with its vodka, including riffs on the paloma, which it calls the Spoetzloma, and the cosmo, known as the Kosmopolitan.“We have the capacity to do that. Our distillery equipment allows us to make diverse products,” she said. “We’re letting this grow. We’re going to see where this takes us.

Matt Pechman, who handles marketing for Shiner as chief marketing officer for San Antonio-based The Gambrinus Company,“Consumers have come not only to expect but to demand a lot more new products from their favorite breweries,” he said. “Consumers today are less brand-loyal than they ever have been. If you’re fortunate enough to have consumer love and loyalty, those consumers are expecting their favorite brands to deliver on their expectations, their desires.
