Veteran economist Ray Perryman is calling attention to the ranking to make sure its message isn’t lost on state leaders.

Perryman doesn’t see CNBC’s business ranking as diminishing Texas’ economic performance, noting the state attracts hundreds of thousands of workers every year and boasts a decade-long record of leading the nation in corporate locations and expansions.But he does consider the factors that hurt Texas’ score to be “critical harbingers of things to come if key issues are not addressed.

“I’ve measured the potential effects of numerous discriminatory social policies , and their potential negative effects are substantial and very real.” Texas political leaders and business groups are pushing back hard on the idea that the state is losing its luster as a business attraction kingpin. “Despite being home to more than 3 million small businesses and the eighth largest economy in the world, a recent CNBC study has alleged that Texas is not one of the top five states to do business in America, ranking it behind Minnesota in a business-friendly climate,” NFIB state director Annie Spilman
