The closure means the single-lane low-level crossing is now the sole road across the waterway.
"It's going to add quite a few extra layers of costs having to use the single-lane crossing," Mr Kempton said."It adds a couple of hours going east and it adds another couple of hours coming to the west, and it [adds] quite a lot of extra cost for our customers." It is a view echoed by the Northern Territory Road Transport Association chief executive Louise Bilato, who said the closure would impact supply chains across the country's top end.
