The label might make you cringe, but the practice of tacking a bit of downtime onto a business trip is boosting the city’s economy.

Blatant leisure? Bulk leisure? “Bleisure”, a mutation of business and leisure, has crept into the lexicon, confusing some, and making others cringe.

I did the same in Sydney, extending trips to include non-working days, or planning month-long blocks, switching between suburbs to properly get a feel for the whole city. That’s how I discovered Jimmy’s Falafel and my favourite place for dumplings, and how I learnt I’d never live in Bondi Beach. Travellers in sectors such as mining, oil and gas made up 17 per cent of bookings in the six months through to the end of March, followed by those in the construction sector , health care and social assistance , services , and manufacturing .Melbourne resident Jon Kerr, the head of global partnerships for World Golf Competition, is one such bleisure traveller.

“I’ve had some trips where I had a weekend at the end of it, so I just drove around the city and explored things, went to the museum and over to the arts precinct. It’s easy to get around, and it’s interesting exploring the city.” Once completed, the Neville Bonner Bridge will connect South Bank’s cultural precinct with the top end of the CBD.
