Following the announcement of betting giants, Betway, as the new title sponsor of South Africa’s top-tier football league, the Premier Soccer League is quickly moving to introduce rules and regulations to stop professional players, coaches and officials from being involved in sports betting.
Two Orlando Pirates players were captured on video suggesting they placed bets on an English Premier League match last season. However, the club read the players the riot act, warning them that sports betting can have serious consequences for professional footballers. “The executive committee has already approved a misconduct rule, which covers all participants in professional football. As the chairman said about the players, coaches, that will be approved by the Board of Governors. It will become a rule. So, that’s already in the works. The Executive Committee does not have the power to amend the rules, but the Board of Governors does. But the exco has approved the rule and it’s ready to go,” Michael Murphy, PSL Representative.
