NEW YORK — U.S. stocks are rising, and Wall Street is relaxing a bit after the first of several highly anticipated reports on the economy this week came in better than expected. The S&P 500 was 0.8% higher in early trading Tuesday after the government reported that inflation at the wholesale level slowed last month by more than anticipated. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 136 points, or 0.4%, and the Nasdaq composite was up 1.1%. Treasury yields eased in the bond market.
In Tokyo, computer chip issues were in demand, with Tokyo Electron surging 6.2%, echoing the strong performance of technology-related issues on Wall Street. Uncertainty around the world, including the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as worries about China, are adding to concerns that tend to set off market swings.
Japan’s central bank, in contrast, is trying to ignite inflation in a long deflation-stuck economy by gradually raising interest rates after years of zero or minus rates.
