A woman uses a trolley as she shops at a Pick n Pay store at Maponya mall in Soweto, South Africa, October 20, 2022.Statistics South Africa’s latest data shows that the Consumer Price Inflation slowed down from 5.1% June, to 4.6% in July.
Contributions to the decrease in inflation came from food and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as transport, housing and utilities.“We’ll likely see the Reserve Bank’s tone soften although remain cautious on the inflation outlook. However, inflation is now very close to the 4.5% midpoint of the inflation target range and could well give the SA Reserve Bank confidence to cut interest rates by 25 basis points in September.
“July sees utility costs surveyed, water and electricity, rates and taxes and of course, the electricity price this year was lower than that of last year. We also saw a significant cut in fuel prices and of course, some moderate residual, all of which contributed to a lower outcome for CPI inflation,” explains Bishop.
