His attendance was confirmed on Friday by the Presidency, as the country awaits the official pronouncement of what has been referred to as the most contested general election in South Africa’s 25 years of democracy. 48 parties in total contested the National election which is the most number since the dawn of democracy in 1994.

Ramaphosa’s party – the African National Congress – has retained its position as the governing party, managing to gaincounted, a 5 percentage point decline compared to its showing in the 2014 National and Provincial Election. The Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters came second and third, with 20.8 percent and 10.8 percent respectively.
