Nuremberg is the home of the original Christmas Lebkuchen, so why not head there for a last-minute festive getaway

Holidaymakers in search of a magical festive retreat this winter might want to venture further from UK borders. The beautiful Bavarian heartland hosts the historic city of Nuremberg, famed for being the birthplace of authentic Christmas Lebkuchen.

Furthermore, nestled in Bavaria's Franconia region, Nuremberg is also close to the unique "Elisen" Lebkuchen. Elisen must contain a blend of hazelnuts, walnuts, and almonds to qualify for its name. There are several must-visit attractions in Nuremberg, including the Aldstadt, the city's historic district. The Kaiserburg Nurnberg, the city's imperial castle, along with the city walls, is regarded as one of Europe's most impressive medieval fortifications. The castle has hosted various rulers who visited the city but unfortunately fell into disrepair following the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire.

Nuremberg is steeped in history related to the Second World War and the Third Reich. Tourists can visit the Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Documentation Centre, where remnants of the buildings still exist.
