Police raid reveals expired food items at Durban warehouse

KwaZulu-Natal police say the warehouse in the south of Durban near the Bluff that they raided was storing expired food items, alcohol and medication that were imported from other countries.

At least 22 children in the country have died after allegedly consuming contaminated food bought from spaza shops.Premier Thami Ntuli says, “Some without expiry date some counterfeit goods, not SAB approved. You even see the antibiotics. You don’t understand how they are here, very dangerous substance to children mixed with food – the sniper, which is a pesticide. You can even see the alcohol expired. It’s a product which we have never seen in our country.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says the warehouse was discovered following the profiling of goods entering the country. “As you can see the sheer size of this place. There is not only 1 shipping company which uses this place. There is different shipping companies. Or the importers who are going to be using this warehouse to store their goods before they are transported anywhere else. We know Durban is a gateway for goods, mostly for cargo that comes into the country and SADEC. We started conducting a lot of inspections and part of what would have led us into such places like this one,” says Mkhwanazi.
