The former boss of the Cumbria-based firm for which it is named on, died on November 25. Edward Pears Stobart was born in Cumbria in 1929 into a family of farmers.
The business delivered fertiliser for a number of years but expanded after a contract by Imperial Chemical Industries. In the 70s and 80s, the expansion of Eddie Stobart was sharp after Edward's second youngest child, also called Edward, took over leadership of the group's logistics operation. Most trading interests were sold off in 1980 and Eddie Stobart took a step back. He invested in an industrial warehouse near Carlisle, where he ended up retiring with his wife Nora Boyd.
