Rihards Maceks was denied bail after gardaí discovered 12kg of cocaine during a search of his vehicle on the M8 in Glanmire, Cork earlier this week

A 31-year-old man has been charged in relation to the seizure of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of €840,000, which was due to be sold on the Christmas market.

The Latvian national with an address at Charles Kickham House, Main St, Tipperary town appeared before Cork District Court, where he was charged with possession and possession for sale or supply of the drugs. Detective Garda Fogarty said they believed Mr Maceks should not be granted bail due to the gravity of the charge. He said the accused had effectively been caught red-handed when gardaí stopped his vehicle. He indicated that Mr Maceks was the only person in the car and that the suspected cocaine had been hidden in a secret compartment between the boot and the rear seats in the car.

He stated that his former partner had indicated to gardaí that he could live at her flat if granted bail.
