Advocates say an initiative that uses green reflector dots to signal upcoming stopping bays is a simple and cheap way to prevent road fatalities. However, they say more funding is needed to maintain and expand the program.

Many of the green dots used in a truck driver safety initiative have not been maintained.Green reflector dots placed on guideposts help truck drivers and other vehicles find a safe place to stop across Australia. What's next?

Truck driver Rod Hannifey came up with the idea 15 years ago after a trip to Sydney in a fuel tanker. Three green reflectors are placed on the guidepost approximately 500 metres from a safe place to pull over, followed by two green dots 250m away and one at the stopping bay. "The use of these reflectors is to provide enhanced safety for all road users at informal stopping bays," the spokesperson said.

"Unfortunately, the Queensland government haven't spent any money on these for several years that I'm aware of, and so a lot of the ones in Queensland are badly maintained," he said. After Mr Hannifey won a Queensland road safety award for his idea in 2005, he hoped the department would expand the program.

"The Bruce" is being labelled a national disgrace, pock-marked with dangerous potholes and signposted with memorials to people who have died on the notorious road.
