A former farmer has turned his passion for the weather into a full-time business after amassing a dedicated social media following. Anthony Violi is up by 5am every day to record his weather forecast and send it to paying subscribers around the country. He then fields calls from farmers from the Pilbara to Tasmania who are all keen to get his insight into what the weather has in store for them.
Mr Violi's business, AV Weather, is part of a growing online industry harnessing Australian's fascination with — and reliance on — the weather. The former strawberry farmer has no formal education in weather forecasting but has managed to turn his keen eye for the weather into a full-time business.Some farmers who rely on long-term forecasting are using online subscription weather services like AV Weather.His Facebook page received a big boost when he accurately predicted 2016 would see big rains following a drought. 'I said to everyone that would listen that it was going to be a really wet year, and sure enough it started to rain,' he said. 'Once that happened, I got all these followers and that's when I started seriously thinking about it.''If it's quiet I try and have a day off here and there, but it's seldom quiet in the weather business,' he said.Thomas Hinterdorfer is the chief forecaster for Higgins Storm Chasing.Higgins Storm Chasing (HSC) started as a website for thunderstorm photos and reports in 2010 and has snowballed into a Facebook page that boasts more followers than the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). The page, which has 1.1 million followers, is studded with dramatic images and videos of flooding, threatening storm clouds and lightning strikes. Thomas Hinterdorfer is the chief forecaster and when he isn't chasing tornadoes in the United States, he's forecasting Australia's weather from a spare bedroom in Toowoomba.
