UK Watchdog Probes IBM's HashiCorp Acquisition for Anti-Competition Concerns

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating whether IBM's proposed $6.4 billion acquisition of cloud provisioning business HashiCorp will harm competition in the affected industries. The CMA is seeking comments from interested parties by January 16, 2025, with a deadline for its decision on whether to proceed further on February 25, 2025. However, an announcement could come sooner.

The proposed merger has drawn attention due to concerns raised by major players in the cloud computing space, such as Microsoft and AWS, who have expressed opposition to remedies that they believe could negatively impact their businesses. IBM plans to integrate HashiCorp's technology, including Terraform, into its software business, enabling its customers to more effectively manage their cloud infrastructure.
