Competition watchdog tsar Rod Sims says tougher laws are needed to stop corporate giants from hoovering up smaller rivals, but has left open the door to watering down a key mechanism in his plan to force tech giants to pay for news content | LisaVisentin

Mr Sims foreshadowed the forthcoming battle over merger laws in a major speech at the National Press Club on Wednesday, but would not go into detail about what form the changes would take.filed an anti-trust lawsuit against GoogleMr Sims said it was "one of the biggest anti-trust cases in the last 20 years" and said the ACCC would monitor its progress.

However, he also left open the possibility of winding back a key mechanism in the ACCC's proposed media bargaining code which, if legislated, will force Google and Facebook to pay news organisations for using their content.
