Banks were flooded with deposits during the pandemic as consumers socked away cash and the Federal Reserve pumped liquidity into the financial system. Those growth drivers are slowing down now, but banks are still likely to be flush with capital.

That could be an underappreciated growth driver for banks’ profits—and their stocks—especially if interest rates start to rise in 2022.

Deposit growth also got a lift from banks’ securities purchases, along with the Fed’s injections of liquidity into the market.
