The Philippine Film industry is now 103 years old. Yet, basic film policies and enabling laws crucial to establishing this industry's baseline standards are practically non-existent, with those that are barely applicable to the sector not being enforced.

As Philippine Film Industry Month comes to an end this September, I hope we can find time to reflect on where we are now as an industry and what we need to do to not just recover from the effects of the pandemic but to plan and prepare our sector for a brighter future.The Philippine Film industry is now 103 years old.

Our audience has changed. While looking back to the glory days of cinema creates nostalgia and fuels us with hope and aspiration to achieve that again, it will not address plaguing issues that we are still facing 103 years after and are haunting us in the way we do our work in the present.Unfortunately, whether we admit this or not, an entrenched culture of mediocrity exists.
