100 girls from KwaZulu-Natal took part in a study to test the effects of headloading on their bodies and balance.

Rural culture often means girls are expected to carry water, wood and food on their heads across difficult terrain.

Neck, shoulder and back pain was reported by almost all of the KwaZulu-Natal girls who filled in a questionnaire about their daily experiences of headloading. The scientists recruited 100 volunteers aged between nine and 17 for their study. On average, the girls’ age was 12.3 and they reported carrying 8kg loads about 2.5km daily. The weight 8kg was 18% of the girls’ 44kg body mass.

“When one considers the scenario where headloads are carried while walking through rugged mountain terrain, [this] could be responsible for lateral ankle sprains and falls,” they say. In their questionnaire answers, the girls said they started carrying headloads when they were just younger than 9, on average, and 96% said they experienced pain while doing so.
