The ransomware attack that has plagued Oakland since the evening of Feb. 8 continues to sharply limit its ability to issue the permits necessary for construction and development in the city.
Oakland is currently unable to accept payment for planning and building permits via its online permitting portal, according to a notice posted by the city Feb. 17. Planning and building permits — documentation of the city approvals that allow property owners and developers alike to proceed with renovations or new construction development — are issued only after payment has been received, according to the city’s website.
A separate notice posted to the portal notes Oakland is not accepting applications for “specific permits,” and that prospective applicants will not be able to upload or download project documents through the portal. Oakland is working to bring its systems back online, per the notice provided by the city, but has not given a timeline for when it expects to do so.
Ongoing construction projects in the city, especially, could face costly delay without the timely issuance of necessary building permits.
