Disgraced Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste's defence team has blamed the South African Department of Justice for preventing him from attending his criminal trial in Germany this week – but this has been denied by government.
Jooste's German lawyer Bernd Groß told the Oldenburg court that while his client wanted to attend the proceedings in person to defend himself, he could not get an assurance from the South African authorities that he would not be arrested if he tried to leave South Africa. He said that Jooste and the Department of Justice had, in late 2017, already agreed that Jooste would not leave South Africa.
