The Taoiseach’s comments came as it emerged householders can look forward to cheaper energy bills this winter as a price war has kicked off among utility suppliers

Leo Varadkar has warned energy companies that they must do more to help cash-strapped households as companies begin to drip-feed small price cuts to their customers.

The country’s largest provider, Electric Ireland, the new name for the old familiar ESB, has announced it is slashing its rates by 10 per cent for electricity and 12 per cent for gas. The move from the ESB arm comes after smaller firms Energia and Pinergy fired the first shot in the energy price war when they told their customers that prices were being cut.

"According to the Household Energy Price Index, domestic customers in Ireland are paying almost €1,000 more every year for their electricity than the European average.
