Just days after the shock cancellation of Splendour in the Grass, Byron Bay’s Bluesfest opened its doors, but the festival’s boss pleaded for financial support.

the 35th Bluesfest swung open the gates on its site outside Byron Bay with a defiant festival boss Peter Noble declaring “come hell or high water, we’ll be standing here next year”.

“We need financial support so we can continue to be a successful event,” he said. “And I’ve shown this weekend how bloody great Bluesfest is. And if you don’t think it’s great, well, I’m sorry, I think you’ve got a hole in this soul.” The minister hinted there could be an announcement of assistance next week from Music Australia, the national body set up in June last year.
