IPC says the humanitarian situation in Sudan remained an absolute catastrophe

This follows last week’s determination that famine conditions existed in a camp for internally displaced persons in North Darfur.

While Sudan’s Government denies the existence of famine, a senior official of the World Food Programme told the Council that the confirmation of famine conditions should serve as a wake-up call for the international community and for members of the Council itself. WFP Assistant Executive Director, Stephen Omollo says, “Conditions throughout Sudan are appalling, and getting worse by the day. This forgotten crisis has not received the political and diplomatic attention it desperately needs. Yet it has wider implications and threatens to destabilize the wider region. Last week’s confirmation of famine must serve as a wake-up call for the international community and for members of this Council.
