Some members have refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leading negotiators to largely ignore those differences when drafting the text of a joint statement to be released at the end of the summit. Negotiators at the Cop 29 climate conference in Azerbaijan have also been struggling to close a deal. And those diplomatic tensions over global warming are being felt at the G20 too – over half a world away on the Brazilian coast, with the UN Secretary-General calling on G20 leaders to break the stalemate.
