MTC x ILBIJERRI Theatre Company, until December 7 presents Gunawarra Re-creation, a play based on the Taun Wurrung story of Gunawarra, the black swan. The play, a result of a creative alliance between Ilbijerri and the MTC, conveys a myth of transgression, violation, compassion, and healing involving a young woman and the eagle creator spirit, Bunjil, and the crow, Waa.
The play is layered into a family history of three generations of women, exploring themes of trauma, connection, and cultural heritage. The performances are beautifully directed by Rachael Maza, blending realism with vivid symbolism, and the play is a testament to Indigenous storytelling traditions and dramaturgies
