The Philippine milkfish industry is grappling with several key challenges, including its heavy reliance on imported fry, which exposes local producers to price fluctuations and supply disruptions. High feed costs, poor farming practices leading to environmental damage, and a lack of reliable data on production and trade are further hindering growth. Stakeholders call for coordinated efforts, improved policies, and strategic investments to support the industry's development and competitiveness.

University of Asia and Pacific Center for Food and Agribusiness Agribusiness Specialist Joy Kristel Orzales said one of the main issues confronting the sector is its continued reliance on imported fry.

“Many fishponds and mariculture parks also remain underused or underdeveloped, which limit the industry’s ability to expand.” “This is because the data only covers the landed number or total catch and does not include the inventory in farms.” “Production of fry can be increased with the help of private sector through private hatcheries and more public-private partnerships on climate-resilient infrastructure,” Orzales said.

“The private sector can help by working closely with the government in giving accurate inventory data of their farms.”
