A fire ravaged the Kara Grains Market in Sokoto, destroying over 50 shops and 132 grinding machines. The Sokoto State Government expressed condolences, pledged immediate support, and formed a committee to assess the damage and recommend fire prevention strategies.

The Sokoto State Government has extended condolences and pledged immediate support to victims of the fire that tore through the ‘Karar-‘Yan-Nika’ area of Kara Market, destroying over 50 shops and 132 grinding machines. Recall that on Saturday morning, fire devastated the popular Sokoto’s Kara Grains Market, destroying grains and properties worth millions of naira.

Deputy Governor Alhaji Idris Gobir led the government’s response, visiting the market to sympathize with those affected and to assure them of the administration’s commitment to providing relief. “We are deeply saddened by the extent of destruction caused by this fire. The government is fully committed to supporting the victims and ensuring measures are taken to prevent such tragedies in the future,” Gobir said during his visit. To address the situation, the deputy governor announced the formation of a committee tasked with assessing the damage and providing recommendations for future fire prevention strategies. He emphasized the role of public awareness and precautions, particularly during the harmattan season. “The harmattan season, with its dry and windy conditions, significantly increases the risk of fire outbreaks. It is imperative for everyone to adopt necessary precautions,” he added. The fire has left a devastating impact on both indigenous and non-indigenous traders, many of whom depend on the market for their livelihood
