An Oracle exec explains how it went from a Zoom customer to one of its key cloud providers in a matter of weeks

The coronavirus crisis was escalating in March when Zoom reached out to Oracle with a problem. The videoconferencing company needed to add capacity after the sudden global shift to remote work led to a surge in traffic.

Oracle, which has about 140,000 employees, had been one of Zoom's biggest customers, Magouyrk said. "We're one of the largest enterprises that runs it," he said. "But prior to March, Zoom was never an Oracle cloud customer." In fact, Zoom itself has struggled with being the spotlight all of a sudden. Beyond the need for more capacity, it has wrestled with security lapses on the platform, which prompted some companies, including Google, to ban employees from using the tool.
