Abortion providers charter 'very expensive' private planes to regional Queensland during coronavirus crisis

Family planning clinicians have had to charter private planes to deliver surgical abortion services in central and north Queensland, as the collapse of the domestic travel industry bites.Marie Stopes has chartered private flights for two weeks to be available for women during coronavirusQueensland Endometriosis Association says some patients have had to change their treatment plans

Catriona Melville says women in regional areas have to travel a fair distance to get to abortion clinics. But Dr Melville said the infrequency — and the prospect of short-notice cancellations if enough seats were not booked — meant it was not a tenable option for Marie Stopes."Obviously that is not a long-term option, it's very expensive and time consuming," Dr Melville said.

"But, again, some of the public transport are running on quite a restricted service anyway, and if they were cancelled last minute that would have just as great an impact on our services."
