A sharp fall in oil prices spurred the selling, with West Texas intermediate crude down more than 7 per cent to $US18.34 a barrel.Westpac reporting a 62 per cent slump in first half profit and deferring its interim dividendHowever, smaller banks and other financial firms dragged, including Bank of Queensland , Macquarie Group and AMP .
