'There's got to be a better way': Exploration company pushes to reduce plastic bags

A small exploration company drilling for gold in Western Australia's Goldfields wants to change the perception that the resources sector is a "dirty industry".Gold explorer Lefroy Exploration has begun trials of hessian and paper bags to replace plastic bags used for collecting drilling samples

ASX-listed Lefroy Exploration has become one of the first mineral explorers in Australia to trial alternatives to plastic bags when collecting drilling samples. "Let's say you drill 250 metres in a typical day and if you bag the whole lot, there's 250 plastic bags," he said. The department's executive director of resource and environmental compliance, Karen Caple, said standard conditions were placed on all mining tenements in WA to regulate the activities of tenement holders."These conditions require tenement holders to remove all waste materials, rubbish, plastic sample bags, abandoned equipment and temporary buildings from the tenement prior to, or at the termination of, the exploration program," she said.
