How putting away $5 a week for my kids taught me the value of saving - Business Insider

'Starting small was the only way for me to not get overwhelmed with how much I should be saving.'

Savings has never been on my radar, mostly because as a teen and young adult I lived paycheck to paycheck. When you're in that cycle, there's not much money or emotional energy left to dedicate to your savings.

We were more comfortable financially and I knew I wanted to focus on saving, for our daughters if not yet for ourselves. I try not to be a self-sacrificing mom, but I knew I would prioritizeBefore I opened savings accounts, I did a little psychoanalysis on myself to figure out why I had such trouble making a habit of saving.

To overcome these issues, I knew I needed to save a small amount and have it withdrawn on autopilot. I also knew that saving for something far off in the future would help me get over the feeling that I wasn't putting away "enough" money. Saving $250 a year might seem like nothing compared to my student loan debt, for example, but the same amount saved for my children's future felt promising. .
