KUALA LUMPUR: Khazanah Nasional Bhd has not approved any commitment for a RM5bil funding for Malaysia Airlines Bhd, says Tengku Zafrul Aziz.

The Finance Minister, who is a member of Khazanah’s board of directors, said this was the first time he had heard of such news.“I have never heard Malaysia Airlines chairman, Khazanah’s board or CEO saying they will put money into MAS, but it’s up to the company if they want to do so.

Zafrul said this when asked to comment about a news report by Bloomberg, citing sources, that Khazanah was considering providing as much as RM5bil to MAS to see it through the Covid-19 pandemic which brought on slump in bookings. The national carrier said it was currently realigning its long-term business plan to the changing aviation landscape.

When asked if the Finance Ministry would be injecting any funds into the aviation industry, Zafrul said no. “Given the liquidity today in Malaysia for ringgit, especially, we see no reason why we should tap on foreign borrowing, although we can and we have limited it.
