A traditional owner and anthropologist says WA's Aboriginal Heritage Act has become a 'development approval process' amid a stoush with a mining outfit.

Native title claimants near Kalgoorlie have spoken out over the potential loss of more historic Aboriginal sites in Western Australia.Native title claimants in the northern Goldfields worry important Aboriginal sites could be destroyed by a mining companyThe company says it "treats our obligations to protect sites legitimately identified at Lake Wells with utmost care", but in this case the mining company involved denies important sites exist.

"Unfortunately, it's become a development approval process that's just steamrolling the destruction of Aboriginal sites."On Tuesday the committee met to consider an application by mining company Australian Potash to develop a mine near the Goldfields town of Laverton. Mr Muir said Australian Potash had not engaged with the Waturta native title claimants to carry out Aboriginal heritage consultations.

Predictable response in the comments from people who know nothing about the case. Mr Muir is pushing a new native title claim which is untested in court. His reputation is not exactly spotless. He’s gaming the system. Aus Potash have done nothing wrong.

Thats what it was designed for ...

Under threat? - were destroyed a long time ago is more like the truth!

Fake news

what the mining company attached to julia gillard the ADF and gina rhinehart? and whoever else id involved. they all have a rude shock coming. americ are moving to guillotines. i do believe australia still use rope

The FACT is that no registered Aboriginal sites are included in the area identified in the application. Sounds like a sour grapes gripe from a self proclaimed important 'anthropologist' because others were consulted instead of him. Not enough facts in this story to make sense.

Why is this so complicated? You have an owner, they are responsible for recognising sites. Preferably catalogue them prior to any mining interest. Assisted arbitration to cut off gouging or tenuous claims, with clear criteria for decision making. Rest follows.

Aboriginals never worked a day in their lives.

Wouldn't they say that. These mining parasites after our re souses to sell for huge profits and line their own pockets.

Take away their rose coloured glasses.

The hypoctrite strikes again! Yesterday Twiggy’s WalkFree foundation acknowledging “we have a shameful history of exploitatation of First Nations People...” at the same time as trying to extinguish their extraordanity history and connection to country for his own self interest.

Ok bottom line. How much compensation do they want?

Defund/Privatise their ABC now!

the mine company is run by unscrupulous gluttons

So from now on all new mine sites will have some sort of aboriginal heritage sites on it they won't tell anyone where the sites are until the mining company has put in all the ground work to get it off the ground and then boom sacred site

Did Dark Emu start the rewriting of Aboriginal history & sacred sites ?.

Terra Nullius all over again.

Greedy and thoughtless

Since when were the Mining companies calling the shots

Well their opinion doesn't mean anything. If they're going to pull that crap then their mining licences can get the same treatment.
