Earlier this year men around the world celebrated their daughters with the hashtag #GirlDad. I had an opportunity to chat with some of these #GirlDads and their daughters to learn what it’s like to work in the same business and how their connections have influenced their careers.

Growing up in this business, I saw all the hard work, time, and energy my dad gave, but from afar. It wasn’t until I entered the business myself where I understood the impact that he’s had being one of the few successful Black agents. I think working in the industry only strengthens our bond. It’s great to always have someone in your corner who can relate to what you’re going through, to prepare you, and to give you advice you can rely on. Having a common bond in business is very special.

I am close enough with my father to be frank and honest about my own experiences and discuss what it means to be female in a predominantly male industry. Our relationship is strong enough for me to bring to his attention to things I see in both the broader entertainment industry as well as within music. We use these conversations as learning experiences for the both of us on what we can do better.Working in the same industry definitely strengthens our bond more than anything.

[But] it’s nice to have a support system and someone that relates exactly to your day to day challenges. For example, if there are any industry related questions or concerns, I have a direct point of contact for solutions. The best advice my father ever gave me was to be fearless and kind but not ever get comfortable. Early on, he put me in rooms and situations where I was forced to build my own relationships and grow my own network, pushing me not to rely on him, but build something of my own.
