In January a Black man in Detroit was wrongfully arrested after being misidentified by facial recognition technology, The New York Times reports.
Experts and activists have objected to the use of facial recognition by law enforcement for years, as the technology has been shown to display racial bias.In what might be the first known case of its kind in the US, a man was wrongfully arrested after being misidentified by facial recognition software.
Williams was not immediately allowed to leave and wasn't released until later that evening on a $1,000 bond, meaning he spent a total of 30 hours in custody. After the image of the suspect was run through the technology it threw up a picture of Williams' driver's licence. This was then sent off to Detroit police in an "Investigative Lead Report," which emphasized the match didn't constitute positive identification. "It is an investigative lead only and is not probable cause for arrest," the report read.
BIUK The same reason the telsa self driving uber ran over black persons on pedestrian crossing paths! Appalling!
Technology is racist. Algorithms made by racist humans.
Thought it was supposed to be accurate. Deeply worrying
99.7% is not good enough. It means 3 out of every 1000 people, a few minutes of traffic in NYC, are going to be scanned wrong and maybe detained for something they did not do. We can't use it.
Do they work on chinese faces?
Facial recognition has no issue identifying 1.4 billion Chinese faces and even to the point where rhey can directly pay with it. Why can’t it identify the number of black people in detroit
facial recognition AI is racist
All psychopaths and roving gangs of robbers and looters accustomed to impunity, with the introduction of modern technologies will be unambiguously and inevitably attracted and punished for their crimes!!!
People from other race also get falsely identified.
Racist facial recognition.
